Cleber Dias is Professor of Leisure Studies at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Dias was born and raised in the Zona Oeste area of Rio de Janeiro, a low-income area of the city relatively distant from the beach. Rafael Fortes is Professor of Communications in the Departamento de Ciências Sociais at UNIRIO. He is also affiliated with the Programa de Pós-Graduação Interdisciplinar em Estudos do Lazer da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) where he coordinates doctoral and master’s level research. Fortes was born in Niterói (RJ), where as a child he spent many weekends catching waves and bodyboarding at the beaches of ‘the strong,’ São João e Imbuí.
